I have always spelt the Old Man's nickname with two n's (Bonn). I note that most people spell it with a single n.
My assumption was always that the name was chosen because it was the name of a famous German university town (currently the capital) -- coupled, obviously, with the fact that his primary teaching subject was German.
As we pronounced it as "Bonn," and not as the French "bon," my assumption certainly seems plausible.
Does anyone know if I'm right or wrong about that?
If I am wrong (which won't be the first time), how did the nickname originate?
